Traffic Increase in January
By Flexo
The month of January was a little slow for Consumerism Commentary. While there are a few hours left if I want to write some more entries, as of right now I have written 58 blog entries this month. This is on level with December, but down from almost every other month in 2006. My assumption would have been for practically level traffic based on editorial volume. Also, without any mentions in mainstream press, I would have expected no boosts.
Yet, my traffic page views in January almost reached 100,000 according to SiteMeter. I haven’t done a scientific review of any kind, but it looks like traffic from Google search referrals has increased significantly. Visitors are also leaving more comments on each post and staying on the site longer.

I’ll talk about revenue in a later post, but January was an exceptional month, at least for Consumerism Commentary. Other sites, like this blog and GuruWatch, need more attention.

Well done Flexo! You should start using Google Analytics (www.google.com/analytics) and Google’s “webmaster tools.” Both tools will help you better understand your traffic and perhaps optimize your sites. Keep up the good work… I hope to be there too as I continue to spill my financial guts!
Thanks very much, Wes! I actually do have Analytics set up but I rarely look at it.
Once you have built up substantial archives and have a site of a decent age, traffic is far less reliant on posting frequency. I have also seen steady growth in my number of search referrals recently, and am also experiencing solid traffic growth without an increase in posting frequency.
I am a little concerned with being so reliant on Google for traffic, though. On a whim, they may change their algorithms, and I would lose a large portion of traffic.
Yep, I get a large proportion of my traffic from Google, so falling out of favor with them would be a bad thing.
