It's like that story in D. Hofstadter's book about the Tortoise, Achilles and the Djinni who pushed and popped their way into nested levels of awareness, only it's a blog.

The publisher gets paid when someone views one of the ad clips nestled between the rest of the video content clips.

I've only just begun speaking with a designer. I'll let you know how it goes as things progress. I'll probably end up paying him what *I* was paid for my first professional web design and programming... It'll be not a *small* portion of monthly income generated by the site, but not a huge portion either. I guess that means about half. It's real money, but hopefully it will be well spent if it makes the site more appealing to view, easier to navigate, and provide the right... "ambiance."

and I don’t want to be accused of over-monetizng

HA! You'll note that my opinion isn't very popular. :)

Actually, some of the most popoular blogs in existence (and I'm thinking of Boing Boing here) are loaded with ads.

I actually kind of like the video ad. It's interesting. I'm curious as to how the payment works, though. Do you get paid when a person clicks on it? If they watch the whole thing? Or some sort of pro-rated hybrid of this?

Re: hiring a designer. Have you pursued this much? When you say that's not working out, what do you mean? I ask because I'm having similar thoughts. I want to redesign GRS, but I just never get around to it. I'd be better served paying somebody else. But how much to pay? And what kind of a redesign? These are tough questions.
